Principal’s Message/Marla Van Laningham
.....Next Tuesday
, each child will be bringing home an envelope of books.  Superintendent Jonathan Raymond has challenged every person in Sacramento City Unified School District to read two books over the summer holiday.  We believe James Marshall families can do better than that!  We are challenging everyone to read four books.  All the information for the summer reading challenge will be in the letter on the outside of the envelope.  For our highly motivated children, we are also sending home a reading challenge from Borders Book Store.  They will be giving out a free book for any children (ages 12 and under) who read ten books this summer.  Check out the flyer, it is a great deal!
.....Thank you to everyone who donated paper towels for the Wildlife Care Paper Towel Drive.  We had an overwhelming response from two classes.  Those two classes were Mrs. Bridgham’s Kindergarten class and Mrs. Gabriel’s 1st/2nd grade class.  They will both receive popcorn parties this week!
.....We are looking for the community’s help to keep our campus safe this summer.  If you see any suspicious or dangerous activity on campus, please make an anonymous call to WE TIP.  This is a crime prevention line strictly for school campuses.  The phone number is 1-800-78-CRIME.  Thank you for working with us to keep our campus crime free!
.....As the school year is coming to a close, your thoughts may be directed more to summer outdoor activities.  However, the summer break is a critical time to have your child seen by the medical doctor/clinician or dentist for required visits for the upcoming academic school year.  Here is a list of required exams:
  • Kindergarten dental exam is due toward the end of kindergarten, May 31.  It can be obtained one year prior to entering kindergarten.
  • First grade health physical is due by December 17.  It can be obtained 18 months prior, which is usually the beginning of March before entering kindergarten.
  • High school students must have health physicals before they can participate in sports.
  • Students needing to take medication at school must have authorizations renewed every school year.  The physician’s order can be prescribed after July 1, for the upcoming school year.
You can help your child be better prepared this fall by using the summer months to get these important examinations and forms completed to ensure your child’s safety at school.  If you have any questions about these requirements, contact Health Services at 643-9412.

As in the past, James Marshall will be offering their annual yearbook. It is being compiled as we speak. This year's memory book will prove itself to be a "must have" for all families. Parents and guardians will be able to look back on the early years of their child's education. And in the future, students will have an opportunity to look back at themselves, and their classmates, to see the changes that occurred throughout the years.

There are candid snapshots included from the many activities hosted by, and held

at James Marshall Elementary. The book fair held in March included a Family Read Night that was enjoyed by many. April’s Math Night was also a big success. Speaking of successes, we had an all-STAR assembly held in April honoring those proficient or advanced in their STAR test scores. The photos of these proud students are forever emblazoned within the pages of our yearbook.

Many thanks are extended to Excel Photography. They have supplied the pictures for almost all of our students and

faculty. Every effort has been made by our staff to fill in the gaps and include those who joined our family after school pictures were taken. Any further exclusions are unintentional.

So keep your eyes open for our notification regarding the cost and delivery date. The announcement will be made when information is available. You can look for it in your student’s “Tuesday Folder” and information will also be posted here on our web site. As always, you can call our friendly office staff for any additional questions.
