Advisory: Mission

Advisories are not traditional classes. They serve as structured discussion & feedback time as well as a learning opportunity with curriculum.

Examples of such curriculum are Values Programs, Test Preparation, College selection, and Career Exploration. All teachers have an advisory and they are implemented school wide.

Advisory is also the mechanism for students to have a voice in the operation of the school. Student concerns are raised and discussed, policies proposed, and ideas for improving the school are developed within the advisories. Senators are elected from each advisory to serve on the Principal's Council.

In order to make time for the advisory within the schedule, the advisory block is two 30 minute periods with half the school at lunch while the other has advisory and then switching.

A specific function the advisories do not address is counseling. Teachers and staff who are not trained appropriately don't engage in practices like grief counseling, etc. When serious concerns or issues arise, advisors defer to the appropriate staff person who put students or families in touch with the appropriate resources.

A component of the advisory-lunch block has been implemented to help develop school spirit and community. On an alternating week schedule, Wednesday lunch and advisory will be combined in order to implement school-wide activities such as competitions, exhibitions, guest speakers, theme events and clubs.
