01 - PhotoShop Collage - Learn Feathering and Lasso Tool ~







Step #1: Open a New Canvas in Photoshop ~
Open PhotoShop & create a new canvas: File > New.
Poster size is 18 x 24 inches.

If you don't have a size requirement, make your new canvas 800 x 600 pixels with transparent background.

Transparent background is just a personal preference, but it's a good habit, especially when making a .gif or .png for the web.
Step #2: Find Images for your Collage ~
Gather your images together & open them in PhotoShop.

Select the Move Tool

Drag your pictures onto the working canvas.
Collect your pictures in one document.

Step #3: Problems?
Hey! It won't work!
The layers are probably locked...
Change the Name: Double click on the layer, change the name, & it will unlock.

If that doesn't work, hit Ctrl+A - select everything, copy it and then drag it over.
Once you have all your files imported, save the PhotoShop file as "your_name.psd"
Step #4: Adjust the Size ~
You may be asking, "How can I make it Bigger?"
Hit (Ctrl+T) or go to: Edit > Free Transform
If you hold the Shift key down while you drag the corners, it changes all sides of the picture at once.

Step #5: Lasso Tool
Use the Lasso Tool
to

Draw around the area.
Step #6: Feathering
Go to: Select > Modify > Feather and set the Feather Radius.

If you're not sure what the Feather Radius should be, just try it!
Step #7: Select Inverse
Then hit Ctrl+Shift+i or go to: Select > Inverse
Then hit "Delete."

The feathered area should disappear leaving a smooth transition between the two images.
Last Step: Save your Work ~
Save your collage as YOUR_NAME.psd
Save your work as a .psd document to save your layers.
Attach what you've got and continue working...
