10 - Blend Images with Feathering - Learn the Free Transform Tool, Opacity and Feathering in PhotoShop

Step #1: Open a New Blank Document in Photoshop ~


x If you are making a banner, most are about 800 x 200 pixels.

x If you are making a regular collage, try 800 x 600 pixels or whatever size you need.

x Set the Resolution to 72

Step #2: Zoom Tool ~


x Zoom Out by hitting Ctrl - (minus) or use the Zoom Tool

Step #3: Open a Bunch More Pictures ~


x Open pictures of yourself or any other images that show you and your life positively.

x Gather your images together & open them all in PhotoShop.

x OK, maybe you don't have to have them ALL right now, but get at least 2 or 3 for starters.

Step #4: Combine them Together ~


x Using the Move Tool moove tooldrag all the images onto the main document.

x Each image creates its own layer.

x Once you have all your files imported, save the PhotoShop file as "your_name.psd"

Step #5: Turn Off the Visibility ~


x Turn "off" the visibility on all the layers except two.

x Click on the "Eye" eye to make the layers disappear.

Step #6: Make the Layers Fit the Main Document


x Hit (Ctrl+T) or go to: Edit > Free Transform

x Using the handles on the corners, you can adjust the size, tilt the picture, pivot it, resize it - whatever way you want.

x Hold the Shift key down while you drag the corners, it changes all sides of the picture at once.

x Adjust your images to fit your document.

Step #7: Lower the Opacity ~


x Then lower the Opacity to a level where you can see both images, one over another.

x Opacity helps you see where your images fit in relation to each other.

Step #8: Lasso Tool


x Use the Lasso Tool . to draw around the area you want removed.

x You can always undo by hitting Ctrl+Z

Step #9: Feathering


x Go to: Select > Modify > Feather and set the Feather Radius.

x

x If you're not sure what the Feather Radius should be, just try it!

 

Step #10: Select Inverse


x Then hit Ctrl+Shift+i or go to Select > Inverse

x Then hit "Delete." The feathered area should disappear leaving a smooth transition between the two images.

Step #11: Eraser ~


x Raise the Opacity back to 100%.

x Select the Eraser Tool (or just hit the letter E) .

x Click on Brush in the Menu Bar.

x Select a soft-fuzzy brush.

x Erase the areas feathering didn't get...

x Repeat the process on all your layers.

Step #12: Save & Attach your Work


x Save your work as a .psd document to save your layers.

x Only use .jpg if you are putting your work on the web.

x Attach your file and try this if you dare...
