Portrait Project - Introduction to PhotoShop and the Pen Tool

Students create a Portrait using a likeness of themselves which they embellish using hand drawings & PhotoShop to express something about their personality.
The finished portrait will express the student as a unique individual and include special clues to that individual, using actual symbols or icons that have special meaning for that person, and by affecting the viewer of the image to feel a specific way or form a specific idea about the image.
Students create a self portrait which presents, depicts, or tells a story about who they are or would like to be, making use of the "Elements and Principles of Design" , by altering a likeness of themselves, and incorporating visual symbols & clues.
Students will complete sketchbook assignments:
1. Draw their own likeness using the " upside down" technique discussed in Betty Edwards' book " Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".
2. Copy their likeness from a photograph of themselves using the "upside down" technique discussed in Betty Edwards' book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".
Betty Edwards' theory will be discussed in class.

Students are introduced to basic elements & principles of design as tools of expression to create a mood or feeling in their portrait:
- line
- color
- space
- texture
- symbolism
Students also learn these basic tools & techniques in PhotoShop:
- Burn & Dodge Tools
- Layering
- Blending Options
- Brush Tool & Settings
- Color Fills & Paint Bucket
- Eraser Tool
- Crop Tool
- Marquee Tool
- Text & Font
- Filter Effects in Photoshop
You need a Scanner & Digital Camera for this project. Teaching kids how to scan their own drawings is not part of this project, but can be incorporated if teacher so desires. However, it may be faster to teach a TA how to scan and get them all done quickly while leaving kids to work on PhotoShop.
Illustrator and Flash can also be used to trace images, but tutorials for those applications are not included in this project.
This project produces very successful portraits that are almost cartoon-like. Students often are embarrassed, however, by themselves looking that way, but must understand that sometimes art work becomes MORE than the sum of its parts.
