Professional Portfolio Project - Create a Portfolio in Dreamweaver Demonstrating what You're Learning in School ~
Subject Area(s): Digital Media / Web Design / Visual & Graphic Art
Length: 6 to 8 Weeks
Minutes: 90 Minutes Per Block
Grade Levels: 10, 11 & 12
Quarter Used: Last
Project Summary
3 Phases: Each phase has its own rubric to be graded separately:
1) Create an index page or "Home" page - A self-portrait of images, words & designs that help demonstrate students' dreams & goals.
2) Personal Statement & Resume - Like a college application with cover letter. Can be done as homework or in other classes.
3) Learning Outcomes - Examples of school work from at least 4 different academic disciplines. Grades, awards, internships, work experience, papers, artwork, or anything else demonstrating a students' capacities.
- Final Grade (if necessary) - Reflects technological proficiency, organizational hierarchy of the web site, attention to detail, QUALITY!
Key Skills - Students will:
- Create a multi-page web site.
- Develop technical proficiency using Digital Media tools & terms such as: Layering, Tables, Bandwidth, Vector Graphics, Visual Direction, Color Palette, Text & Font, Color Contrast, FTP, Hyperlink, URL, etc.
- Understand common formats used for web publishing: . jpg , . gif , . psd , . swf , . fla
Description of Final Product
The Professional Portfolio represents the culmination of a student's academic experience. It acts as a repository for their best work and prepares students for real-world activities, such as getting a job or getting into college.
Teacher Notes and Comments
FTP:
If students have their own folders and permission's on a web server they can use FTP to update their own pages.
Or - students can attach their root web folders to emial or a journal database using a compressed folder method.
- But even if there are no web servers or any of these things, you can still create web pages using this project and view them with a browser just like a normal web page.
- Don't let the technology intimidate or interfere. There are many ways to build a web page and these steps will help you.
Timing:
Count backwards 6 to 8 weeks from the last day of school - that's your start date for this project. An artificially imposed deadline keeps this project brisk. Projects this long have a high burnout factor and if the due date is firm, that helps.
Also, students may not have enough completed school work to populate the evidence pages for the Learning Outcomes until later in the Semester.
No Personal Pages:
Keep it professional. Students end up wasting valuable time and any personal pictures. Anything appropriate content can be incorporated in portfolio pages themselves.
Teacher Reflection
What "real world" activities does this project simulate? In what context would adults need to tackle this same problem/project?
When looking for a job, you search on line, right? Monster.com and so forth? And when the boss needs to hire a worker they also use the web.
Employers are looking for evidence of a potential employee's skills, and if they see a quality web site, job seekers are more likely to get a call-back for an in-person interview.
The problem is, server space to store web pages can be out of reach for some students. This project provides that space and the expertise to create a professional web site.
