Instruction and Learning: a Different Experience

Instruction at New Tech is fundamentally different than at most high schools. Team Teaching allows teachers to integrate their respective curriculums to enhance the power of Project Based Learning.  The common team pairings: English/ Social Studies & Science/ Math , are derived from the commonalities of the individual subject areas. science!

Students do not work in isolation at New Tech.  Projects are completed in groups, graded by quality, group process, presentation, and peer review.  Students collaborate on a group contract that defines how they will work to get the job done.   Should a group member be fired by consensus, they make up the project on their own.

Make no mistake; you'll recognize many aspects of normal high school life: Traditional texts, homework assignments, quizzes and tests.  The difference is that instead of being the major components of a unit (as in traditional high schools) your work serves to support and supplement the group using the PBL process.  Lecturing is minimized and consultation maximized. A different relationship is built; one predicated on a higher level of trust, respect, and responsibility than typically found in most schools.

We use Project Based Learning almost exclusively and rely on our smaller environment to be more tuned to each other's needs.  At all times, the educational setting reflects a professional environment; there are no bells and relationships between staff and students are more like a mentor/mentee rather than teacher/student.
