America’s Choice High School, Sacramento has been established with one goal in mind – to ensure that all students reach an internationally benchmarked standard of achievement in English Language Arts and Mathematics by the time they graduate.

America's Choice High School
has high expectations for all students and communicates these expectations through explicit standards of performance. Teachers motivate students to achieve academically and offer instruction in a language comprehensible to each student. The smaller environment allows each teacher to forge strong ties between students and families, and instills a sense that each student is valued and cared for in this uniquely rich setting.

Safety Nets:

The America’s Choice curriculum is not only based on stringent standards, but it is also designed to help students meet those standards, no matter how far behind they are when they begin.

Those who begin the program with special needs, or who have fallen behind, are quickly identified and given the extra help they require in order to get them up to speed.  America’s Choice provides Safety Net programs designed to help students attain the requisite standards.  These programs support students work in the classroom and can take place during, before or after the school day, or on a Saturday.  Summer school is mandatory for those students who finish the school year below their grade level in either literacy or mathematics.

Smaller Learning Environments:

It is very challenging for teachers to forge strong ties with students in large high schools.  Typically teachers have only fleeting relationships with the 120 - 160 students they work with over the course of a day.  A wide range of students have shown that smaller learning communities not only improve student achievement, but also report fewer discipline problems, higher student and teacher attendance and lower dropout rates, particularly among disadvantaged students.

The learning environment of America’s Choice Upper Division resembles that of a college, university, or workplace.  Students have freedom in selecting their program, setting their goals and scheduling their time.  This supportive environment addresses the needs of young people to interact with each other and allows them to take responsibility for their learning, transition to adulthood, and ultimately, to stay in school.

Higher Expectations for All Students:

America’s Choice High School uses the New Standards Performance Standards, which cover English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and Applied Learning.  These standards complement and extend content standards, which most states and districts already have in place.

At America’s Choice High School more is expected, rather than less.  Performance standards are designed to challenge students to high levels of achievement.  Teachers utilize multiple types of assessments, including ongoing evaluations, portfolios and the New Standards Reference Examination.  Teachers also use the New Standards Portfolio system to help students produce and organize the full range of work required over time.
