Survival:
This unit contains vivid stories, both fictional and true, about extreme
situation: arctic exploration, being alone in the wilderness or alone at sea
in a canoe, hiding in an attic to avoid persecution, and surviving slavery.
Many students will wonder how they would stand up to such situations, but
they are never in the position to find out.
A
Changing America: From the time of the first European settlements
on the East Coast, courageous men and women continued to press west in
search of new lands, new opportunities, freedom, and sometimes, just
adventure. Whatever the motivation, these men and women dare to go beyond
the known and tackle the unknown. Along the way, they encountered
treacherous terrain that many were totally unprepared for; sometimes
friendly, sometimes unfriendly, natives; extremes of weather; and plants and
animals they had never seen before. Through it all they persevered and
eventually settled the entire coast.
