PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS:
Each student will develop to his/her potential in physical growth, neuromuscular development, emotional control, and social awareness. Physical Education will provide opportunities to acquire skills and develop interests in a variety of recreational activities. Students will be given a sense of achievement and enjoyment through participation. Each student will become a more highly skilled, physically fit, and well-rounded person.
This handout provides the procedures, rules, expectations, and grading policies of the Physical Education Department.

UNIFORM:
1. All students must wear the McClatchy Physical Education uniform. It consists of white T-shirt and gray shorts with the CKM logo.
2. During inclement weather, students also may wear white or gray cotton sweatpants or sweatshirt.
3. T-shirts, shorts, sweatpants, and shirt must not have any zippers, pockets, hoods, writing, advertisement, or logo.
4. The Physical Education teacher will mark all clothing with the student’s name in permanent ink. This includes sweatshirts and sweatpants.
5. Students who are unable to secure proper clothing should see their teacher.
6. Students who wear clothes not belonging to them will receive a non-suit. The clothes must be turned into their teacher.
7. All students must wear tennis shoes and white sweat socks.
8. The total cost of the CKM T-shirt and shorts is $20.00. (T-shirt¾$10 and shorts¾$10)
LOCKERS:
1. Students will provide their own locks. We recommend a quality combination lock.
2. Do not use lockers to store books or personal items; lockers are only for gym clothes.
3. The locker room is not a safe place for valuables, despite all security measures.
LOCKER ROOM RULES:
1. At the tardy bell, instructors will lock the locker room. Tardy students must report to the roll call area. Do not knock or kick on the locker room door to try to gain access.
2. Teachers will clear out the locker room six minutes after the tardy bell. It will remain locked until the dressing bell.
3. Students with a valid excuse will not be graded down.
GRADING SYSTEM:
1. PARTICIPATION: Daily participation is a major part of the student’s grade. All unverified absences, truancies, non-suits, and poor or non-participation days will affect a student’s grade as follows:

a) Extended health absences will be taken into consideration.
b) Students will be excused for up to three days for school related activities.
c) Students missing P.E. class due to athletic events will receive credit for participation that day.
d) Excessive absences, even though cleared, will affect a student’s grade.
2. MAKE-UP P.E.: Students wishing to make up “excused” days of non-participation may do so at Make-Up P.E. The availability, dates, times, etc., change throughout the school year. Students must check with their teacher to determine when Make-Up P.E. is available.
3. WRITTEN TESTS: Written tests on a sport’s rules, strategy, and terminology will be reflected in grades.
4. CITIZENSHIP: Students will receive an “O” for Outstanding, “S” for Satisfactory, “N” for Needs improvement, or “U” for Unsatisfactory based on the following criteria:
Sportsmanship
Respect for classmates and teachers
Attendance (includes 2nd roll call)
Tardiness
NON-SUIT POLICY:
1. A student’s grade will be lowered for non-suits.
2. Students with excessive non-suits will be referred to the Vice Principal for appropriate action.
3. Students in athletic competitions or who are in uniform (cheerleaders, ROTC, etc.) also must dress. Otherwise, they will be marked as a non-suit.
HEALTH EXCUSE POLICY:
1. Students may be excused from Physical Education activity with a written excuse from a parent or guardian. The student still must dress in a CKM uniform.
2. Written excuses must be presented to the teacher at roll call. A note for a previous day’s non-suit will not be accepted.
3. Students who are to be excused for more than three consecutive days need a written medical excuse from a physician.
