Golden Empire has a
dedicated group of individuals who support the curriculum in a variety of
ways. Our students have the privilege of weekly experiences in
library, computer lab and physical education. For students who are
identified as needing assistance, there is the added support of a resource
specialist.

Computer Lab
This is the beginning of my ninth year here at Golden Empire. I remember my first day in the
computer lab - November 2, 2001. We didn't have any programs on the computers. We
didn't have any
head phones. In fact, because the computers were not networked, every
program that we purchased had to be individually loaded on each computer.
Currently, our lab provides
curriculum support for math and language arts through Orchard and
Cornerstone software. It supports class reports and projects with
online access to educational material. Just this year our district
updated our computers with Microsoft Office 2007. Our web page is updated
almost daily with details of upcoming events, notes from meetings, and
information helpful to our families. The student resource page on our
website offers helpful links for our students to enjoy the internet both at
school and home.
Our computer lab is part of Golden Empire's vision of
educating our students for 21st century. I look forward to enhancing
your child's education through their exposure in the lab.

News – March 2009
Library Book Bingo is in full
swing! So far, we have 11 Bingo and 3 blackout winners from our third – sixth graders. To get Bingo a student must read six
books, each from a different genre, write a book review and submit it to the
library. When six in a row are complete – it’s B-I-N-G-O! Those brave
students who go on to get Blackout will have read 36 library books and
written 36 book reviews! They deserve a great prize and a new book, and
that is just what they get. Encourage your students to read. Reading is
the key to education.

Physical Education
PE - March 2009
The time of year has arrived for Fitness Testing! Our 4th and 5th grade
students are very excited to demonstrate their proficiency in Fitness. We
took Pre-Tests WAY back in October and now will get a chance to show our
growth. All 4th and 5th grade students will take the Fitnessgram Fitness
Tests in March and they are tested in MUSCULAR STRENGTH, CARDIOVASCULAR
ENDURANCE, and FLEXIBILITY. The 5th grade results are sent into the state.
All 5th grade students in the state of CA are tested. They are tested again
in 7th and 9th grade. All students MUST pass 5 out of 6 components of
Fitness by 9th grade or they keep taking Physical Education until they pass.
We are working on “Striking” in all grades. Primary grades just completed
working on striking with their hands in different ways and with paddles.
Third grade explored with rackets and badminton equipment. We are moving up
to hockey sticks and bats next. Intermediate grades are also moving on to
long handled implements but their focus will be on golf clubs. With the
rainy February and into March we are also getting a lot of dancing in! 4th
and 5th grade students have been working on “The Hamsterdance” and “Square
Dance.” 6th grade students are working on social dance!

Resource Specialist
I have been in charge of
the Resource Specialist Program at Golden Empire for eleven years. I
have a new part-time aide, Linda, and an as-needed aide, Lynn. We are
currently operating as a learning center. That means I serve students
that have been identified with special needs, as well as those students who
need additional curriculum support.
