Covering 48 acres, Hiram W. Johnson High School is located in the eastern portion of the City of Sacramento and is one of six comprehensive high schools within the Sacramento City Unified School District. Established in the Fall of 1958, the school was named for the 23rd Governor of the Great State of California.
In 2001, HJHS participated in a high school reform effort called e-21 (Education for the Twenty-First Century). The goal of this program was to close the achievement gap through personalized, rigorous and relevant standards-driven instruction.
Essential Elements of the e-21 Effort:
Small, Caring, and Personalized Learning Communities where students are known and cared for academically and personally.
Student-Centered System with Student Supports and Safety Nets in which students are active partners in shaping and assessing their educational experiences and environment.
Student Pathways to the World of Work and Post-Secondary Education are developed by students and their parents/families that match their goals and interests and ensure achievement of high standards.
Rigorous, Relevant, Standards-Driven Teaching and Learning takes place in all classrooms. Students have opportunities to learn in ways that actively engage them and in ways that connect the classroom to the community and the world of work.
A Culture of Continuous Learning exists at the site and district level that is driven by a shared vision and expectation for quality teaching and learning in all classrooms.
Collective Responsibility for student outcome is shared across all educational stakeholders and within each stakeholder group.
Home-School-Community Alliances play a vital role in guiding, monitoring, and supporting their child’s learning.
By adopting these principals, HJHS has transformed itself from a massive impersonal school into a smaller, more welcoming learning environment for all students.
Hiram W. Johnson High School is
