When is Early Dismissal?

Please remember the unusual schedule for this week. No school tomorrow (Nov 11th). We have a full day Wednesday (9 am-3 pm), and early dismissal (1 pm) Thursday and Friday (Nov 13 & 14).
It doesn’t end there!
All next week (Nov 17-21) is early dismissal too. The following week (Nov 24 and 25) are full days (9 am-3 pm) followed thankfully by three holidays (Nov 26-28) and a weekend. Which takes us into December!
All of this is pretty easy to visualize on the calendar that went home in last week’s newsletter...

It’s Not Too Late for Butter Braids,

grade class appreciates your support!

Hoe Down Thanks

Thank you Ms. Mullen for giving us the opportunity
the get the Hoedown off the ground. We also want to thank the staff and parent for donating goods, their time, and just for coming out to have a good time; this would not be possible with out all of you. Special thanks to Ms. Allison Branscombe and Mr. Esteban Zacarias. They were the behind the scene heroes who worked along side me to make the
Hoedown a success. All three of us look forward
to doing it again next year.
—Angelica Griffith

Author from Apple Hill Visits LdV

Author Joan Barsotti, will be coming to LdV, Tuesday
January 27, 2009. If your family will be venturing
to Apple Hill this Fall, look for her books at the Barsotti Orchard and some of the other Orchards on the loop. Among her books are Grandmother’s Bell and the Wagon Train 1849,
recommended by the California Department of Education, Nana Gets a Cat, Mike and Nick and the Pumpkin Patch, and for Intermediate readers, Okei-san, The Girl From Wakamatsu. During your family outing to Apple Hill, you may just see our Author for this school year and/or her books!

Here’s What I Know...

Last week I received a phone call I thought I would never receive. It was from one of my son’s teachers telling me my son (a high school sophomore) is struggling in his class. This call was a huge surprise to me since my son is a good student and has not shown any signs of trouble in the last
10 weeks. I realize how spoiled I have been by LdV teachers who alerted me the moment my sons began to drift...before they struggled...before 10 weeks passed. Still, I am grateful to have received this call—this chance to help my son regain lost ground before the end of the semester. LdV parent/teacher conferences begin this week. Before you enter your child’s classroom, consider how special a LdV
teacher—who goes the extra mile for our full of extras program—is. And whether your student is doing well, or needs improvement, consider thanking the teacher.
I assure you, I did. —Diane Soule, Editor

Word of the Week

If you were running a race, would you stop ten feet short of the finish line? With the goal plainly in sight, most people actually speed up and run through the finish line.
But what would you do if the finish line was ten miles away? What would you do if you fell down and skinned your knee at the beginning of the race? Children and adults who do not quit—who continue their“race” —are people with PERSEVERANCE, our character word of the week.
Whether they are trying to solve a difficult math problem or working hard to make a sports team, children who keep trying often become successful in life. Many popular
expressions encourage perseverance, including, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” and “Winners never quit and quitters never win.”
“Perseverance is the hard work you do after
you get tired of doing the hard work you
already did.” —Newt Gingric

Unsung Heroes

For the last three and a half years, Elizabeth Campos has been singularly committed to LdV’s Dolphin Store. In preparation
for graduating out of LdV she has begun to transition out of working in the Store. She has already trained cashiers, placed orders, and organized the store to make it easier for the next UNSUNG HERO. Stop by the store on Tuesday or Thursday morning, thank her for her years of service, and maybe volunteer to take a shift or two.
[For those of you unfamiliar with Unsung Heroes, this
is where we acknowledge the parent who goes a little
further…the teacher who inspires a little more…the
staff person who really shines…the student who
makes a special effort. Submit your unsung hero’s
name with a brief explanation of who they are and
why you chose them along with your name. If you’d
like to acknowledge a job well done, even if you don’t
know who to credit, that’s okay too. Fax, email, leave
a note in my box, or call me. —Editor

Dress Code

Yes, we have a dress code at LdV and it is for everyone. The dress code is detailed in the copy of Handbook that I’m sure you held on to. Briefly, no spaghetti straps, no bellies showing, no short skirts or shorts, no sagging pants, no hats (forward or backward), no sleeveless shirts, shoes need to have straps...you get the picture. The dress code does apply to the adults on campus— you are an example to our students. It isn’t a matter of fashion, it’s a matter of respect for our school and ourselves. Please note: students will be asked to call home for a change of clothes.

Notice of Pesticide/Herbicide Use

LdV is scheduled for service by SCUSD’s Small Grass Crew every Wednesday. The crew may or may not spray every Wednesday. If they do spray, they will post notice on the parent’s bulletin board in the front office. A copy of SCUSD’s Pest Management Program listing all chemicals applied to all sites is available in the front office for parent review.

Fingerprint or Background Check

To clarify a somewhat muddy situation, Sex Offender Background Check forms must be filled out by an volunteer on campus (that includes grandma). If you have been fingerprinted at the Serna Center, please note that at the bottom of the form. SO Background Checks must be completed yearly. SO Background Checks do not need to be completed by those who have been fingerprinted with the district. Parents driving on field trips or having contact with students without a teacher present (coaches, afterschool programs) must be fingerprinted with the district. There is a fee for fingerprinting.
