This is the Parthenon. We discuss how there is not even one straight line in this amazing building during the lecture on Greek Architecture. Students also will learn about Greek architecture through art and a field trip.
Here stand Leonidas at Thermopylae. The students will learn about this battle along with the other battles that occurred during the Persian Wars through lecture, discussion, and video.
The Minoans were a very advanced civilization 3500 years ago. The students will learn that they had running water, flushing toilets, and equality, through lecture and discussion.
The students will learn about how the Ancient Olympics officially came into existence in 776 B.C., the events, awards, famous athletes, and the true Olympic spirit. The students will do this through lecture, writing, and the holding of their own Olympic Games.
The students will learn all about Greek Mythology. They will do this through art, writing, film, and lecture.
Here we see a Spartan shield that was captured in 425 B.C. from the siege of Sphacteria. The students will learn about the life, education, and training of Spartans.
The picture here is the birthplace of Democracy, the Pnyx Hill. This is where the Athenians would discuss and vote on laws. The students will learn about this and other amazing things that occurred during Golden Age of Athens.
Through lecture, students will learn about Alexander the Great and his conquests during his 40 year military campaign.
Literature
One of the most famous texts in history is Homer's the Odyssey. The students will read it, and make a board game to test their knowledge of this great piece of literature.
The Iliad is the other famous text that Homer wrote. Both the Iliad and the Odyssey were sung around campfires by traveling bards. The students will be read The Iliad while they work on their many art projects.
The students will read a series of Aesop's Fables, and then retell two of the fables by writing a script and presenting the fable in a short skit.
The Adventures of the Greek Heroes will be one of the choices the students will have when their monthly reading genre will be mythology.
Pankration is a novel set in 480 B.C. It is about Nic and his desire to watch Gellius compete in the Pankration during the 480 B.C. Olympics. The students will hear this story as they are working on art projects.
Cosmic Wonders (Science)
The picture to the left shows some of the constellations we know of today. The students will learn about stars and how the constellations we have today come from the mythology of the Greeks. They will learn this through lecture, discussion, and their field trip to Sly Park.
