Who is a medical coder (patient record abstractor) ?

Medical coders read medical records and then convert the medical documentation into billing codes for each diagnosis, procedure and injury. Insurance companies and health plans use that coding to reimburse medical care providers. Besides supporting reimbursement, medical coding supports assessments of clinical care and medical research activity. There are two coding manuals, made up of over 1,000 codes.
