School Accountability Report Card

June 10, 2011

Dear Parents,

I am pleased to announce that beginning in the 2011-12 school year, O. W. Erlewine will be introducing a new Integrated Thematic Instruction (ITI) Program for our students. This new focus for our school provides us with an exciting opportunity to build on the successes we’ve had over the past few years. The program will be modeled after a similar program at another successful school in our district, Leonardo da Vinci.

For those of you unfamiliar with ITI, it offers a well-balanced, thematic, standards-based instructional program which is closely focused on meeting the individual learning, emotional, social, and physical needs of each student. Students will learn through different modes, styles, and multiple intelligences. Themes will be used as a way of understanding and organizing new concepts. This program has been shown to increase student achievement in part because it presents new information with existing knowledge rather than in isolation.

Our teachers are very excited about this change. To prepare for this transition, they will be attending trainings for three days over the summer and spend additional hours learning about ITI during the school year.

One of the exciting components of this new program is an increased role for parents in their children’s education. We will be creating more opportunities for parents to get involved on a regular basis. We’ll have more details on this as we get closer to the new school year.

Rest assured the things that have made Erlewine the place you know and love will continue. Technology will continue to be a focus for our school, utilizing Smart Boards and student computers. We will continue our Science Fair, Family Nights, ECO Clubs, Nature Area & Garden, and other successful and popular programs. This is an opportunity to expand and grow, building on what you’ve already helped us create.

We are looking forward to become an Integrated Thematic Instruction School and know it will allow all students to learn using their strength and creativity!
