Kindergarten

Room 1

Ms. VanVliet

I am very excited to have your child in my class and am looking forward to an exceptional year! As you read on you will find information that I have included to help you and your child make the transition to Kindergarten less stressful and more beneficial for both of you.

1.       Do Your Best- Reach Your Goals! is a school wide theme. We will be working on understanding how to set attainable goals both in and out of the classroom.

2.     Our day starts at 8:00 am and ends at 11:20 am. Students should not be at school before 7:45 am, and please remember not to leave your child unattended. If you are going to be late picking up your child please call the school to let me know.

3.     Curriculum- Our basic curriculum is set by the Open Court (language arts) and Macmillan McGraw-Hill California Mathematics programs. In addition Science, Social Studies, Second Step Character Education and Standards Plus programs are used throughout the week.

4.     Students will be offered a snack at 9:45 each morning before recess. NO NUTS!!! Please bring in a snack for the entire class once a month. Non-perishable snacks such as Gold Fish Crackers, Graham Crackers, pretzels, raisins, etc. can be brought in at the beginning of the month. Freshly baked snacks, fruits and veggies and other perishable snacks are welcome and will be served that day.

5.    Homework- Students will receive homework beginning in October. It will be sent home every Monday and should be returned on Friday. The purpose of the homework assignments is for your child to work with you and learn the routine of completing assignments at home. You will be expected to read with your child for at least 20 minutes every night in addition to the homework assignments.

6.    Friday is Spirit Day!  Your child is encouraged to wear their O.W. Erlewine shirt. Shirts are for sale through the office.

7.    Parent Volunteers- Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday from 8:00-9:00 am. If you are available to participate in the classroom please return the handout in this packet. Please keep in mind that if you are unable to work in the classroom I also have projects that you can take home!

8.     PTA- Please make sure you join the PTA this year. Parents are encouraged to attend the meetings each month on campus.

9.     Additional Information- Breakfast and lunch are served in the cafeteria each day. You are welcome to accompany your child to the cafeteria for breakfast or lunch. Students who are in 4th R will go directly to the cafeteria for lunch after they are pick-up from the classroom.

10. Home-School Communication- Your child will bring home a purple folder every Thursday. In it you will find information regarding a variety of topics and your child’s work from the previous week. I ask that you remove all of the items in the folder and review any work with you child. You are then asked to sign and return the empty folder every Friday.
