Sutterville’s Before and After-School programs support and enrich our school’s students, developing their talents and enhancing what they learn each day in school.  Below is a list of current activities. 

Before and After School Programs

The 4th "R", Recreation
The 4th "R" is a before and after school recreational daycare program on campus. We care for Kindergarten through 6th grade. We offer assistance with homework, we have activities such as arts and crafts, cooking, science, sports and games. In addition to being open before and after school, we are open during winter and spring breaks, as well as all summer long.

We open at 7 am and close at 6 pm.

Before School

Orchestra
Program Description: Students will begin or continue the adventure of learning the beauty of music. The orchestra focuses on string and woodwind instruments. Students will perform at a variety of school events throughout the year.
When: Mondays and Wednesdays, 7:30 am to 8:10 a.m. (beginners), 8:10 am to 8:50 a.m. (advanced); starts Wednesday, September 3rd; year-long session
Where: Multi-Purpose Room
Ages: 3rd through 6th graders
Cost: $35 per month includes rental of instrument; extra cost for music books and shirts

After School

Backyard Art Academy
Program Description: The Backyard Art Academy program this fall will have a “Wild Animals” theme.  Students will start with basic drawing then do other projects with that theme including painting, block printing and mask making. 
When: Wednesdays from 3:15-4:45; sessions start on Wednesday, October 1st
Where: Room 14
Ages: 3rd through 6th graders
Cost: $12 per week includes materials; session is free for the student if a parent attends as a helper.
Other:  Please have your child bring a healthy snack

Chess Club
Program Description: Chess Club teaches children both basic and advanced strategies of playing chess. At the same time, the Chess Club aims to build students’ critical thinking, strategic planning and creative problem-solving through chess playing.
When: Mondays, 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm; Fall session: September 15-November 10

Ages: 1st through 6th grades
Cost:  $63.00 for 9 weeks

Homework Club
Program Description: The Homework Club provides a safe and quiet place to do homework. Two teachers will be on hand to provide guidance. This is not individualized tutoring.
When: Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 3:15 pm to 4:00 pm; year-round session; session begins Monday, September 22nd
Where: Cafeteria
Ages: 2nd through 6th grades
Cost: Free of charge; pre-registration is required

Publications Club
Program Description: The Publications Club will publish a quarterly newsletter for the PTA. Students will learn journalism skills: gathering news, creating layouts/design, editing, proofreading, printing, and distribution.
When: Mondays, 3:05 pm to 4:00 pm, Monday, September 29th to mid-May.
Where: Room 22, Mr. Donachy’s room
Ages: 4th through 6th grades (limited to 10-15 students)
Cost: Free

Sutterville Striders
Program Description: The Striders Running Club helps children by learning exercises, stretches, running games, sustained running, techniques and training methods, also covered are nutrition and health tips.
When: Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:15 to 4:00 p.m.; first day of Striders is Monday, September 22nd and the last day of the fall session will be Wednesday, October 29th
Where: Field by 4th R
Ages: Any grade or fitness level welcome.
Cost:  $25.00 per child and $20.00 for each sibling
Coordinators: Lead coach:  Jenny Hitchings and Laurie Hensley. Volunteers needed (no running required)!!

Scholarships are available for any child that needs one. To request a scholarship, contact the program coordinator (many of these programs provide scholarships directly).  The PTA also has scholarship funds available (contact your child’s teacher and ask him/her to request the funds from the PTA board). Scholarships do not apply to the 4th R program.
