Volunteers at William Land Elementary School

William Land Elemenatry School is fortunate to have volunteers from the Westminister Presbyterian Church and Parkview Presbyterian Church generously donate their time and energy to assist teachers and staff with everyday lessons, school events, fundraising, and extracurricular activities.

Summary of Westminister Programs and Services

1. Core Program

Classroom Aide Services – a blend of mentoring and tutoring, focusing primarily on language arts and mathematics curricula. (Primary and Intermediate grades)

2. Ancillary Services

Westminster Reads – Annual morning event, in which various Westminister staff and members visit the school and read to students (September 22nd).

Proctoring of STAR Tests – Westminister traditionally has provided proctors, including its classroom aides, for the annual tests, both to assist the teachers administering the test and to lend a little “moral support” to the participating students.

Annual Field Trip – Westminister organizes and funds an annual field trip to a Bay Area science center, e.g., Lawrence Hall of Science, San Francisco Exploratorium, and the Space Center in Oakland. The trip originally served William Land’s now inactive MESA club.

Support of School Music Program – Over the last two years, Westerminister has provided funding for the school’s fledgling music program (a total of $2,500 raised at two benefit concerts held at the church).

Proposed Facility Improvement – Westminister is interested in providing in-kind services and funding for all-weather tables and planter boxes to be constructed on one or more of the school’s outside perimeter patios. (Goal: to facilitate the use of the patio areas and to open up the possibility of class garden projects or some form of basic horticulture education.)

Sixth Grade Field Trip Scholarships – Westminister funds three $175.00 scholarships, which are applied to cover the year-end sixth grade field trip costs for students who otherwise would not be able to participate.

Christmas Basket Program – Westminister’s classroom aides and other church members have worked together to provide supermarket food certificates and children’s gifts to particularly needy families, identified on a confidential basis by the School Principal and Healthy Start staff.
